To get this message back on topic: How many here still
work, for an
income, with the types of vintage systems they collect?
I feel fortunate to have done so ever, but I haven't made money off
of anything except PeeCees and (modern) Suns since 1996. The closest
I came to it recently was loading up BIND on a SPARC-IPC in 1999.
When I was developing an application in MACRO-11 in 1986-1987, I was
appreciative at the time that I was playing with cool hardware while
they were throwing huge piles of unsightly cash at me. When I was
developing products for VAXen at various times from 1984 through 1994,
I was equally happy that I got to play with the best toys. Same goes
when I sold Amiga products (since 1994, but not often since 1996).
I'm not unhappy for the chance to work on SPARC hardware, but it
doesn't have the same magic for me as a PDP-11 or VAX or 68000 does.
