Subject: windows ce
looking to find windows ce. mostly what i come up with are devices that have
windows ce on them or i find the software that was installed along side
windows ce. i would like to find windows ce 6.0 if possible. i would like to play
around with it. maybe someone even has a windows ce
6.0 palmtop or something even
Windows CE was not sold as a standalone product. It was an OEM product that various
people would use to create products on an embedded computing platform. There was a
version of it that ran on a PC - not unlike the Android dev platform - to help customers
develop their own CE applications. That came with the OEM Adaptation Kit.
I don't think CE was used in a palmtop after version 2.1. Several PDAs used versions
out to 4.2 or 5.0, but after that the whole PDA thing died out in favor of smartphones.
I'm not sure if 6.0 is the new kernel - I know that all versions up to 5.0 used
essentially the same kernel, but thereafter they decided to go with more of an NT-lite
approach, because certain customers were not happy with the 32-process limit in the
original kernel.
I think you're going to have a hard time finding the kit, because it was an OEM-only
product. However, looking on eBay I see at least one development board that "comes
with" CE 6.0, whatever that means.
I shipped CE 4.2 and 5.0 as the kernel test manager. Cheers -- Ian
