Sounds familiar for an A500, too - at least I recall two ICs and some pull-up
resistors. I remember building interfaces like that so we could use junked PC
floppy drives as external drives (the prices that Commodore wanted for
'official' external drives were insane)

It's the same mechanism in an amiga 1000 (iirc) if anyone has that instead.
