Yes, the evidence is that he was able to repeatably produce parts to
very tight tolerances. One of the things he is famous for is having
built his own precision machine tools for that purpose. He received
awards for his improvements to the lathe. He advocated the
standardization of screw threads, and his journeyman Joseph Whitworth
developed the first standard screw thread.
