At this point, I either take donations of vintage software or I am tipped
off there's still places online serving it up. My own estimation is that
FTP sites are in danger, or at least well on the way to being dead, with
some notable exceptions. In some cases, we are finding obscured but helpful
mirrors of data, making it worthwhile to grab a copy and store it in
http://archive.org/details/ftpsites for later.
While yes, there might be fresher mirrors out there, it's sometimes
surprising what is gone or shifted or has bowdlerized out portions of the
original sites over the years. By grabbing these capsules, we make the data
available in some way.
For example,
FTP.ARL.MIL has gone through radical change since the
beginning years,
KOMKON.ORG does not actually respond at the moment, and so
on. I hope that the FTP sites stay up forever, but life is showing they
won't.

Question: Are these archives based simply on what gets donated/submitted
or do they actively search for materials that seem "appropriate"?
