I'm not sure I see the problem. It's impossible to know if the
machines they were taken from were operational. Breaking devices up
for spare parts, in such a way that the spare parts are indeed
functional subsystems, is a perfectly good way of recycling otherwise
useless stuff. That applies to cars, it applies to computers. For
example the first item: it's not bits of printer chain suitable only
for hanging on the wall, it appears to be a useable printer chain
assembly ready to load into your printer.
And yes, quite often parts are more valuable than the whole system.
Ask any car parts dealer...
