I've discovered that my terminal window had gotten into some weird state
where any process requesting input was blocking output, so I didn't get
some of the SIMH output, or some output from other programs. So after
resetting the terminal window and trying again, I get:

It seems to consistently crash in that same place.
Wait, hold the phone...
Building SIMH myself instead of using the package from the Fedora
repository results in it working. Sigh.
