I totally agree with you. I have no problems with
French engineering at
all. I have spent a lot of my childhood and adolescence in France and I
love it. But they do like to do things their own way, so to speak ;-)

Unfortunately, often unconventional engineering is regarded as unreliable
or poor. My experience (in many fields, cars, cameras, computers, etc)
would indicate that very often the unconventional design is as reliable
and as usable as the normal one provided you understand it and handle it
accoridnigly. For example, if you try to repair as Prestor shutter
assuming it works like a Compur you will have problems. There seem to be
a lot of clueless repairmen who don't think but just follow the standard
procedures, and I suspect that's where the problems stem from.
