not so big as
to be an interesting question. But if
we ask the question from a designer's point of view,
such as, "what was the first CRT display that was under
program control and was included for the express purpose
of being an output device?"
By that definition, the year would be not later than 1961 (when the PDP-1 and
its CRT I/O device appeared).
And I'd say that being people of scientific inclination,
this is exactly the right way to think about it. We
find upper and lower bounds, and, as we learn more, we
narrow those bounds. But we are careful to avoid falling
into the trap of the courts where we would try to force
more precision than can be justified.
