Our CS lab consisted of a bunch of Sun ELC's and IPC's tied to a first gen
SPARCServer. I mostly used them to telnet to the P90 linux box I had set up,
which well mopped the floor with the IPCs. Had a much nicer debugger, as
well.

About ten years ago, at the school, we had a lab full of 386's, that
worked just fine for a learning (non-production) environment.
You don't NEED, nor even WANT, a fast machine for LEARNING sort
algorithms, etc. There were enough that there was hardly ever a wait to
use a machine.
One of our administrators wanted to TRADE ALL of the PCs for 3 or 4 486
machines. We barely managed to stop him.
