(1) Just load DOSLFN in your config.sys--you get long filename
support (at least under DOS 7.x) without having to run Windoze.
Hmm, that's interesting. Might give that one a try.
(2) Run under Win9x--you get TCP/IP support as well as
support for a
few other protocols. Win9x doesn't get in the way of doing direct
port access, generally speaking.
I'm wary of going anywhere near Win95 to be honest - seems like that would be
asking for stability issues, particularly for any machine that might be left
on for any length of time.
DOS on the other hand was always pretty stable :)
