I don't know of any that don't allow this, and I don't know of any
other mailing lists which don't have that subject line tag. I've
suggested it a few times over the years but nobody seems interested.

the old Majordomo program (remember those days?) provided those headers.

Indeed. Don't *all* mail clients support that? I don't know of any that
don't.
However, subject tagging isn't for automatic sorting purposes. As you correctly
pointed out, there are better ways to do that.
These two things have nothing to do with each other, and having one doesn't obviate
the need or lessen the desire for the other.

I've seen maybe one other list in decades that didn't provide subject tags.
