Who did Gary Kildall lift it from?
It seems to me that some of Kildall's major sources of inspiration were
DEC operating systems such as TOPS-10, RT11, and OS/8. However, CP/M
doesn't exactly match any of those.
"Monitor", the predecessor of TOPS-10, used filespecs with (up to) six
character filenames and three character extensions, starting in 1964 on
DECtape. (Disk support arrived in 1967.) Were there any earlier
operating systems that had similar filespecs?
