Except on ThinkPad batteries the on/off switch actually
connects/disconnects the embedded charge monitoring microprocessor.

If it's anything like the 'switch' on most NiCd packs, it does nothing.
It's just a 2-state flag for the user. You charge the battery (with it in
either position) and flip it one way. When the battery goes flat you flip
it the other way. Then if you have a pile of batteries you know which are
charged.
