One needn't actually DRINK the mercury (or even hold it in one's hand) in
order to demonstrate, or even look at, a mercury delay line. I'm willing to
bet that most of those schools have mercury-switch thermostats everywhere.
Every school I attended did.
In high school science class the teacher brought out a jar full of it and poured it out
on the tabletop (it had an edge).
We got to play with it, tried picking it up with our fingers, etc.
No big deal.
Similar experience except we started with HgO (Mercury Oxide) and heated it. It went
from
a bright orange powder to a silvery liquid. Very cool! ;-) But would probably be banned
from
high school chem labs. Yes, we had fume hoods!
