   Mine has
circlips. I have taken these off and [...]  I normally have a devil of a job gettign
them off without them flying
 across the room....  
 If they're the kind I think you people mean, I know someone who calls
 them "jesus clips" because, as he described it, you try to take one off
 and struggle and eventually it comes free - and goes *ping!* across the
 room and you go "jeeesus!!". 
That sounds like them. I've seen them called 'E clips' too, due to the 
chape being somehat similar to a capital 'E' with  cured top and bottom 
and a very short middle bar. 

Now try removing one that is retaining a spring-loaded part on a shaft 
without getting at least one bit hitting you in the face. And then try 
putting it back without using laguage that would make an old sailor 
blush.
