Weren't they used for radar displays?
If he means J-scopes, yes. They have a trace that runs in a circle,
and a deflection plate - actually a pin - running down the centerline
of the tube. The signal on the pin can deflect the trace out a bit.
Early radar alitimeters have them.
I am not sure if that is what he means, however...
And then there is the 6762 Wamoscope. It had electrostatic plates for
centering the trace, but the business was done with klystron-ish
action. They were combination CRT/TWT tubes.
