In all of this discussion, I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the
LMC555, a CMOS version of the original bipolar part. Much better
power characteristic (1mW typical) and good to 3MHz. Will operate
down to about 1.5V. Available in a variety of packages, including
micro SMD (about 1.4mm square).
