I worked with two other guys in 1971 with glass plates making
both
reflection and transmission holograms.
Included both solid objects, but the best item in the transmission ones
we made was a working lens. It was
positioned such that there was an item you could see thru it, and move
your head back and forth to change
the magnification. I don't recall any attempt to use a mirror.
We used helium-neon laser light or the exposure and playback.
