[...] given how little the phone functionality is
expected to be
used compared to everything else.
I'd agree with you, except that they are
sold as phones and it is
difficult to get a device that carries voice calls over the cellular
network that _isn't_ one of these phone-is-an-afterthought things.
This debate
is as hold as the hills.
Well, it's no older than cellphones, surely!
No one will admit to buying a phone or a piece of
software or a car
or a TV because [it's] simple to use. No[,] we buy it because [it's]
"feature rich".
Well...for some values of "we", perhaps. And I don't want a phone
that's just a phone because it's simple to use; I want it because it's
a better phone (which is where we came in) and has a much smaller
exposed attack surface (eg I don't worry about someone exploiting the
Web browser in my Nokia 5190 because it doesn't _have_ a Web browser).
By the way if you want a real simple easy to use phone
"Doro" are
also good and available in the US...
Actually, "available in the US" is of little-to-no use to me, as I'm in
Canada. But when I look at that page - either the one you gave or
http://www.dorocanada.com/en-ca/, their English Canada page, what's the
first thing I see? How easy it is to use the camera.
I don't WANT a camera. (Well, not in my phone.) And "easy to use" (a)
usually isn't, for me, and (b) isn't what I'm looking for. I want a
phone which has had engineering time put into the _phone_, not the
camera, or the MP3 player, or the Web browser, or etc. "It seems
perfection is attained not when there is nothing left to add, but when
there is nothing left to remove."
What don't I see on that webpage? Any way to contact them. Any way to
find out what they've got (their "products" link - which exists only on
the USA version of the page, oddly - gives me a bunch of checkboxes and
no form-submit button). Any useful documentation (though this could be
hidden behind whatever is keeping me away from their product listings).
If their phones are as "easy" to use as their webpages, they won't have
any number buttons, at least not for me.
