I think we got used to crappy cheap keyboards but they

the 80's crappy cheap keyboards. IBM Model M, Northgate, Apple extended
keyboards, etc cost a decent chunk of change new, more then a new knock
off tablet costs today (a whole computer). Personally I still use Model
M's on all my PCs (have a stack of cleaned ones in the basement) plus a
few Northgates. I just like the feel of them compared to anything new
(heck anything USB). I don't think Apple made a decent keyboard since
the ADB days (Haven't tried one of their chicklet keyboards yet). IBM
Thinkpads had decent keyboards for a laptop, but that was when Thinkpads
were IBM, the new Lenovo ones cause diehard Thinkpad users to complain.
I never had the patience for a membrane or chiclet keyboard for real
use, but the 520ST keyboard was by far the worst "conventional" keyboard
that I ever used. It drove me nuts to the extent that I'd prepare text
on a PC then copy it over on the 520 rather than have to enter it on
that keyboard.
I installed booster springs, which helped a bit, but I'm not sorry that
I got rid of the thing finally.
