There seem to be a ton of tools online starting around $2 US a piece. If
I'm going to spend the time/shipping to order one, I may as well get a
decent one. Can anyone recommend a specific model/US source for it?
Yes, I'd recommend one if you're going to do much of this. In a pinch,
I made one from a 14 gauge bicycle spoke, but that's because I couldn't
find my regular tool and was in a hurry.
Radio Shack sells an extractor tool, as does OK. Basically, they're
pretty much the same in operation as the cheap Far East models.
If you want to go deluxe, then investigate the Hakko/CHP extractors.
Very different in operation from the usual stuf--and not
"universal"--you buy a tool for each size of PLCC--at about $50 per. I
had an opportunity to use the one for 68 pin PLCCs and it was a
beautiful piece of work and operated very well. But too rich for the
few times I actually need to use one.
