okay, so I'm not imagining the odd VS/MV2000 thickwire port and standard
thickwire cable issue! WHEW! Wonder why DEC did that????

PERQ 2 machines (and others as well, most likely) have screwlock posts on
the AUI connector (like you'd find on, say, a PC serial port). A
conventional drop cable won't fit, and forget about trying to plug a
trasceiver directly into the machine.
I had to make up a special drop cable with screwlocks at one and and the
ethernet-style slide lock plate at the other (to fit the transceiver). It
was then I discovered how hard it is to buy the special cable (4 twisted
pairs, one thicker than the others) in small quanitites...
