actually had an account on one of those machines when I was a freshman
(Purdue CEE '89). I believe it was ec. Of course I had no clue at the time.
My feeling at the time was that the EE department and ECN was where the
cool computer stuff was going on. CS and PUCC was about batch
processing. Probably unfair, but what I remember.
I have a little book here called "Purdue University UNIX Pocket Guide"
that I still use quite regularly. (Can you still get a copy in the
Armory basement?) The cover of the book is an ASCII art map of the
Purdue computer network at the time. One of the machines is ghg.
