Really? I always thought they were using rag paper at the time. Interesting.
They were. Hemp fiber was one of the main fabric materials then, as
cotton was expensive to process before Eli Whitney and flax didn't
grow well in North America at the time (no, I don't know why) -- wool
then as now was rather expensive, sheep need lots of acreage.
