The drives are HP drives which were OEMed by IBM, Tandem, Sun, Pyramid,
etc.
They are high quality, reliable and readily available
(at least here in
Silicon Valley). I own two of them - both being purchased with the last
couple of years for $25 each - and both are in near perfect condition.
Unfortunately, mine only support 1600 and 6250 bpi.
I'll keep my eyes open for the Qualstar - but I've never seen one
available
from any of the local dealers or scrappers.
You might also want to spy after an M4 9914 drive. All the drives I've had
in my vincinity handled all 4 densities read _and_ write. However, according
to the documentation, writing 800 bpi is an option. The user/diagnostic
manual is available on-line somewhere.
