Let's not forget all of the Apple IIs that were sent to schools--very
many an early student's exposure to computers started with an Apple II
in school.
The II and the Mac are so different that it's hard to imagine the
affinity would be automatic, though.
There might have been some brand loyalty; I have great memories of the
BBC Microcomputers we used in high school.
My reaction to the first Mac was that the screen was way too small for
me. It was Osborne all over again.
Serious users installed third party 21" megapixel displays at the first
opportunity, and of course the Mac II family came with larger, colour
monitors.
