Well, regarding proprietary formats, I've done floppy recovery for many
years. "Raw format" files need not contain anything more than the track
and side number, the sampling rate and location of index pulses, as well
as a list of intervals between pulses. A descriptive text record at the
start indicating the type of drive, when the file was created and a
brief description of what was on the label, if any.
While FPGAs are nice, I've created such data using nothing more than an
8-bit AVR with a bit of attached SRAM. A low-cost ARM would be more
than sufficient for floppies.
There's no real reason for secrecy.
