Non-academics tended to use Modem7, X-Modem and its
variants.
[snip]
Academics tended to use Kermit, and sometimes even
feigned lack
of knowledge of the existence of the Christensen protocols.
[snip]
While far from a definitive correlation, it was often
possible
to draw conclusions about somebody's background based on those
views.
I find this amusing only because MODEM originated at Yale, AFAIR.
At least, that's where I encountered it, several years before
Kermit existed.
