Because the 8088 didn't HAVE a shift immediate
instruction. Check with
Allison about which processor introduced it, and when it cam out. Was 286
<= 1983?
Sorry if I'm not Alison :), but it has been the 186/188 (in my opinion
the most beautiful member of the x86 family) which first used a barrel
shifter and first allowed immidiate multiple shifts. Correct me if my
memory is corroded.
