Sridhar is obliquely referring to the 31 bit addressing introduced
with S/370-XA. While the address space was increased from 24 bits to
31, data remained a 32 bit word just like it had been since the S/
360. The 31 bit addressing carried over into ESA and the S/390, until
zSeries made the switch to a full 64 bit architecture.
