Possible.
But when I was at the UofU, there was a colloquium with some guys
from Evans and Sutherland, talking about their
hemispherical
display system using lots of monitors. They *did* have problems
with mold attacking their optical interface material. They spent
a lot of time and a lot of money investigating it.
So it's definitely known that mold can do that, but it's probably
the case that it can happen by other means as well.
