You could even do 12 bits per column if the card punch being used is
forgiving.
The CDC opersting sytems (NOS, SCOPE, KRONOS, etc.) used to punch
"banner" cards in column binary so I/O clerks could pair up decks
with other job output.
But a card with all columns punched is like a wet noodle. Very
flimsy--good for jamming card readers.
