behave nicely if connected to inetd? (I want it to run through

Yes, but that's one of the advantages. Open port to what?? I would be
against running anonymous UUCP.
Actually, I really prefer services, even authenticated ones, to only accept
requests from authorized IP ranges (except Gopher, HTTP and mail).
