Can a reasonable PDP-11/45 system be made using a
single RK05?
It's entirely dependent on your desired OS. I don't know how far back
one might go to find a suitably small RSTS version that fits in 2.5MB,
but many (most?) versions of RT-11 will fit in that much space, and
compared to a floppy install, an RK05-based RT-11 system will feel
quite zippy.
In college (1970s) we had an RT11-SJ V2 system booted from an RC11, and a RSTS system
booted from an RF11. The RSTS system used the RF11 plus an RK05 for its public/system
file storage (later a second RK05 was added). That was the main campus timesharing
system, supporting 16 terminals. RSTS V4A-12.
So with the older versions of RT or RSTS, an RK05 is more than ample. Later RT11 I don?t
know at all but I assume it will still be fine. Later RSTS is likely to be tight on an
RK05; I think you can perhaps fit V10.1 on an RK05, but if so, only barely. Also,
sufficiently recent versions of RSTS either require, or at least strongly prefer, a
minimum of 124 kW of memory ? in other words, a max memory config on your 11/45.
