What's an "OLS"?
SGI's fancy term for a 240VAC->48VDC power supply. OLS = "on-line
switcher." Early revs (1992-1993) had a habit of catching fire and
they were recalled and replaced in 2000-ish. My Onyx/Challenge XL Rack
requires two. One recently sparked shattering a rectifier of some
sort; both mine are 1992-3 revisions. My soldering skills are weak and
I'm not going to attempt repair myself.
I can't figure out the serial number to my system. I figure I can add
the serial number to my support folio account at SGI and see if
they'll still honor the recall 13-14 years later. Rackable may have a
warehouse full of of these things somewhere (one can dream.)
