Moving the head to cylinder #306 ("parking the head"),
and then moving it to cylinder 0 won't damage anything on my machines.
Howzbout: "reflashing" the BIOS?
Although that does NOT actually damage any hardware, on some machines
the BIOS would then have to be unsoldered, and then reflashed on a
different (functioning) machine. a bit more hassle than an erased MBR,
or a wiped CMOS on a machine without a "SETUP" in ROM.
