Watching the thing work brings to mind the head positioner on the
Univac Fastrand FH drums--basically solenoids driven by each bit of
the head position address (e.g. 8421) and via a system of levers,
translated to a physical head position.
How's that for on-topic?

Wasn't there a 5-1/4 hard drive (late 80s) that did a similar thing, some kind
of telescoping binary length set of solenoids (Ontrax?)
