Aren't the copy machines you find in the
libraries
designed to copy pages in a book without breaking it's
spine/back. Just makes copies at the library, then
scan the copies.
There are copy machines that can optically adjust the
image distortion that takes place as the page curves
away from the scanning bed?

We don't have them around here, tho... libraries
around here are lucky to be able to keep the
electricity on...
