use the _same_ oil. I am told the automatic was none-too-reliable, but
geting it to work at all using engine oil as the hydraulic fluid was an
achievement.

I've never been in an automatic Mini. Was there enough spare power?
Although completely separated from the engine, the original Honda Civics
used 10W40 engine oil in their manual transmissions. (a carryover from
their motorcycle (including N/Z600s) heritage?)
