You can use .NET if you like, cost or no cost to you. I don't
consider only the monthly hosting charges as the be-all-end-all
definition of the costs, so merely getting free monthly hosting isn't
cheap enough for me to call "free".

Working in a .NET environment for free is still too expensive for me.
