On the subject, does anyone have any experience with the Genius G540?
It claims to be able to program GALs as well as (E)EPROMs and there's
a 16-bit adapter for it. The price is very attractive.

I have been programming eproms with one for an N8VEM z-80 board, and also
for some door controller devices :), and have blanked some GAL chips with
it, but I have yet to actually program something into a GAL with it.
It is definitely less painful to get cabled up than my Xtronics pocket
programmer.
