If the PSU isn't built for rapid over-current
shutdown, and the only other
alternative is the 6800uF cap, then I'd put the money on the cap.
I've had aluminium electrolytic capacitors go dead short very suddenly.
One time I was working on a Canon CX printer, tracing through the PSU
regualtor module. One day it was fine. Left it overnight, when i picked
up my meter probes the next morning all sorts of thigns eemed to be
groudned that shouldn't be. Turned out one fo the capacitors had just
sshorted overnight. Not powered up, no real reason for it, I guess the
oxide film just disolved.
