DEC regard the entire spindle/bearings/housing as being a single unit. No
manual I've ever seen talks about taking it to bits. The same applies to
the spindles in CDC drives, BTW.
I got a couple of drives which could be considered parts units and one
definitely did not have noise or vibration on spinup. Maybe I could swipe a
spindle assembly out of it. That's extremely low priority as I don't have
the time now nor a decent workshop set up yet plus the fact I need to get
rid of some of the extra DEC equipment for space reasons.
I forgot to
mention Tony, I swapped all the boards out using the second
RK07 which was said to be part of the working 11/34A system (this is the
drive w/lousy spindle bearings). Still had the same problem as we last left
it. I put all original boards back to get back to ground zero on this
problem.
I really wonder if it could be a controller/cabling problem. I have the
RK611 prints as well (I think you do, don't you?), so fixing that would
be possible as well.
Yes, at least I've got an RK611 printset in the pile of documents from the
haul.
But lets see what it's doing first. The complete RK611/RK07 system is
complex, no sense in saying otherwise. So finding out where the problem
is (or at least where the system thinks the problem is) is a good first step.
Do you have a quad-height extender board? You're
going to need one...
Oh gee thanks for the "ominous" message here Tony! :-) :-) No, I don't
OK, you don't _need_ an extender. You can always solder wires onto useful
points on the board, stick it in and probe the ends of the wires to sort
out what's going on. That's how I debug the many machines I have for
which I don't have the extender boards.
have an extender board. That definitely would be
a good tool to have as I
plan to keep the MicroVAX II and MicroPDP-11 machines plus maybe the 11/23
in a BA-11 (5.25" box). Anybody out there have a spare extender board they
are willing to part with? Hmmm, does Vector Electronics still sell them? I
should get a Unibus extender too!
They do turn up from time to time. I got several in a large clearout of
DEC spares/options a few years back. I also bought a box of Q-bus boards
at a rally for a few pounds (on top was an 11/73 CPU...) that contained a
couple of extenders :-)
There are (of course) at least 4 extenders - single, dual, quad, hex. All
of them are useful...
Thanks again Tony, Chris
