mechanism, then you can (of course) check the power lines at the drive

At the drive power connector (no drive connected) the DMM reads "5.00".
The +12 VDC rail reads "11.99". I suspect these are both within tolerance.

I noticed just now that while the drive clicks, the motor spindle spins
without interruption. Also, if I pull the data cable off the drive does
nothing (surprise, surprise). It must be something easy.
