change. Human nature seems mostly to be to believe what we want
to hear rather than to listen to what is being said and then try and figure
out what will actually happen or what the truth actually is.

which discussed the human topic, maybe it is not so far off?
This discussion is getting rather voluminous and off-topic. At least there
was a genuine attempt to bring the Y2K thread back on topic (by talking
about COBOL pitfalls and workarounds). And if you knew this was off-topic,
why did you bother to reply? (If that's not what you meant by "this thread
is not appropriate", sorry if I misunderstood.)
