I think they're running code loaded from a local server that does
nothing more than logic-and-verify, and all the results and transaction
requests are queued into a database that's fed daily to the big machines.
There are an assortment of line-of-business apps at any bank, of course,
and they vary. Loan processing software, for example, helps them
with compliance and filling out forms, but doesn't really "process".
