Thus the need for a 12V power bus, and hubs that run on 12V. If you
are also a ham, then you have plenty of other uses for a big 12V
power supply anyway.
Now if only 12V PC power supplies were more readily available, I'd switch
over to them, just so backup power would be easier (pair of golf cart
batteries and a charger).
