Rail?
Around here, railroad tracks are unsafe at any speed. Speed limits
are typically 5 mph, and even at that speed the cars sway and rattle
in a frightening manner.
Yes, Rail. I've shipped quite a few tubas around the country--I have a
couple of large fiberglass padded cases that I use. Stick the horn in
the case, wheel it down to the local Amtrak station--get it on the next
train going out. It goes in the baggage car and never gets more than
about 2 feet off the ground. Cheaper for large bulky objects than just
about anything else. If you put your shipment on a pallet, they'll
happily handle loads up to 500 lbs.
I've never had a bad experience with it. Greyhound is far worse--and
usually takes longer.
