I agree with your sentiment, but I do sometimes bid early if:
* A few days have passed and there does not appear to be any interest
* I am afraid I will forget to bid at the end, and I feel the item
is undervalued by the community
I have obtained items this way, so you can win with early bidding, but
it assumes few others are interested in an item.
